I finally located the info I wanted to share regarding the recent Card Making poll I conducted here at the A Muse News blog. The question I asked you in the Survey was:
Which HOLIDAYS do you make cards for? (select all which apply)
The results:
- Christmas(95%)
- Valentine's Day - adult (75%)
- Mother's Day (74%)
- Easter (65%)
- Father's Day (63%)
- Halloween (58%)
- Thanksgiving (43%)
- St. Patrick's Day (24%)
- Hanukkah (5%)
According to the Greeting Card Association, the major Greeting Card buying holidays are:
- Christmas - 2.2 billion cards sent
- Valentine's Day - 190 million cards sent
- Mother's Day - 155 million cards sent
- Father's Day - 105 million card sent
- Easter - 86 million cards sent
- Halloween - 31 million cards sent
- Thanksgiving - 27 million cards sent
- St. Patrick's Day - 9 million cards sent
Of course, we can't directly compare the two sets of data due to the set up of the survey. It is interesting, however, to see that Christmas is a HUGE motivator to both make and to purchase cards. It's also interesting to see that holiday card-making seems to map 1:1 with holiday card purchasing.
If you add up the number of cards above, over 2.8 billion cards/year are sent for specific holidays in the US. If you estimate that the average retail value of each card is $3 --> that's $8.4 BILLION! In fact, according to Unity Marketing, the market for greeting cards is over $10 billion/year in the United states (2006).
Did you know that many of the newer holidays have been created by the Greeting Card industry? More holidays = more card giving. Here are a few to mark on your calendars:
- April 30th - Administrative Professionals Day
- September 7th - Grandparents day
- October 16th - National Boss Day
The most important reason to make a card this week, however, is to participate in the 2nd VMAA! To learn more about VMAA, hop on over to www.amuseaddicts.com. Not a member? Not a problem... just click on the register button and you're on your way!
If you're still reading... you are a superstar! Have a great day!

This year was the first for me to make Secretary cards for two secretary's in my husbands office. I used the "Bee's Knee's" greeting! Very fun!

You forgot Groundhog's Day! I make cards for that as well. But then again, I live in the town where the movie was made, so we celebrate it big time here. A groundhog popping out of his hole makes for an adorable card. :)
